MIA classes (Grade 2-6)

2009/2010 Classes information is coming soon! Check back in September 2009.

The afterschool MIA classes is open to all students by grade levels and will serve to students who can attend the weekly meeting held at school. During these weekly meetings, students will engage in math games, problem solving, and math contests.

What is Math in Action classes’ objectives?

  • To show children that math can be fun and is not just about drills.

  • To help them utilize and sharpen their math skills.

  • To gain their confidence in problem solving.

  • To provide supportive environment for them to practice their math skills.

What kind of activities?

Math activities will include math games, problem solving, and low-key contests. These activities will widen our kids’ knowledge on math and improve their math skills on computation as well as problem solving. Some of these activities may cross other subject like science, PE, and music.

The upper grades (4th, 5th and 6th) classes will be participating in a number of local and state competitions.

What’s a typical class look like?

Classes run for at least 1 to 1.5 hour and meet once a week. The ratio is 1:8 for upper grades and 1:6 for lower grades. The class begins with warm ups and a review on the subject that will be discussed that day. Then activities will follow. These activities range widely from simple card/dice or board games to solving math problems (math puzzles, logic, brainteasers, and contests). In addition, children will receive weekly assignments. Completing assignments in a timely manner will earn them MIA monies, which can be used to purchase fun prizes at the last day of class.

What topics will be covered?

Teachers have power standard to follow from LWSD. Also, teachers have timelines that show their plans throughout the school year. Math in Action’s lessons and activities use these timelines as a guide. For example, during the weeks our fourth graders are learning fraction; the Math in Action kids will play Fraction Card games, solve food fraction problems, and design flags that reinforce ‘fraction concept’. Topics presented are usually in line with whatever they are learning in their class, and challenging problems within the concept may also be presented.

Who should be participating?

MIA is an enrichment program, NOT a tutoring program. Students who participate are those who:

  • Want to sharpen their math skills by participating in fun activities.

  • Love to explore math through games and enjoy games/activities involving numbers.
