Math in Action class is designed to provide additional time for students to explore the fascinating subject of math. The success of the program will rely heavily on its participants. While most students will benefit from this program, students who commit to positive thinking and participation will benefit the most.

  • The class will focus on math practices and activities in which prepare students to compete in a number of local and statewide math competitions. Weekly meetings are on Tuesdays. Additional meetings on Friday will be scheduled as needed.
  • This class is fun and enriching yet it requires hard work and commitment. The class will cover a range of basic math topics from basic integers operations to fractions and decimal number concepts. There will also be discussion of other math topics appeared in the past competition tests, which include algebraic reasoning and patterning, logical thinking, geometry, and probabilities. This class will involve students working individually and with their teams as they are preparing to compete at local and state competitions. Students will be exposed to multi-steps problem solving strategies. Topics discussed may be above their current grade level.

  • Students must be self-motivated and ready to learn and participate.  There will be weekly assignments, and students are responsible to complete them on time. Assignment may take about 1 to 2 hours per week.
  • Diagnostic Test is required. Students will be tested in the following areas: number sense (whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents), elementary geometry and measurement, data and probability.
  •
