| MIA FIFTH GRADE 2011-2012 CLASS IS FULL ***************TEST RESULTS *************** Whether or not your child's name is on the list, if you want to discuss your child's test result, please feel free to contact me (rizwanamasude@gmail.com) The following students are qualified for MIA Fifth Grade. Ciaran O, Eesha M, Hafsa M, Jonathan H, Maxwell P, Rhea P, Ryan B, Shuchi J, Rabeeya A, Matthew S. If your child is new with the MIA class program, please read through together with your child the information and coach's note below. REGISTRATION AND CONTRACT WILL BE GIVEN TO PARENTS ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS (SEP 19). PARENTS ARE REQUIRED TO COME ON SEP 19 AT 4:15-4:30PM. STUDENTS NEED TO ARRIVE AT ROOM 120 AT 3:00PM. Snack and volunteer rotation will also need to be filled out. AFTER THE FIRST CLASS, YOU AND YOUR CHILD HAVE ONE WEEK TO THINK ABOUT THE PROGRAM. NO REFUND AFTER THE SECOND WEEK. Class starts on September 19. Weekly meeting on Mondays afterschool. Additional meetings on Thursday are: Jan 12, 19, 26, Feb 9, 13, Mar 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, Apr 12, 19, 26. Location: Room 120 There is no class when there is no school. Parents meeting is required on September 19 from 4:15 to 4:30PM Fee: $85 - binders, materials, and competition fees are included. Payable on the first week of class (Sep 19). No refund after the second week of class. Math in Action class is designed to provide additional time for students to explore the fascinating subject of math. The success of the program will rely heavily on its participants. While most students will benefit from this program, students who commit to positive thinking and participation will benefit the most.
This fifth grade MIA class will focus on math topics and practices in which prepare students to compete in a number of local and statewide math competitions. Weekly assignment will be given by the math coach.
Notes from the coach:
This class is fun and enriching yet it requires hard work and commitment. It runs from September 19, 2011 through May 7, 2012. The class will cover a range of basic math topics from basic integers operations to fractions and decimal number concepts. It will also introduce students to other math topics appeared in the past competition tests, which include algebraic reasoning and patterning, logical thinking, geometry and probabilities. This class will strengthen students’ skills working with their teams as they are preparing to compete at local and state competitions. Students will be exposed to multi-steps problem solving strategies. Topics discussed may be above their current grade level. Students must be self-motivated and ready to learn and participate, willing to work in a team as an active team member learning coordination with others. There will be weekly assignments, and students are responsible to complete them on time. Assignment may take about one hour per week. Class meets on Mondays afterschool from 3:00 to 4:30 PM. No class when there's no school. Additional meetings will be scheduled prior competitions on Thursdays. Location: Room 120

| HIGHTLIGHTS 2010-2011 May 7, 2011 MATH OLYMPIAD 2011 Thousands of fifth to eight graders accross Washington State participated in the 2011 Math Olympiad. Our Fifth Grade MIA students took part in the event. They did a great job bringing home 1 medal in the Significant Problem and 2 medals in Short Problems. Congratulation to : Kerilyn H, Rama T, Rafia K, Hailey H, Alisha H, Anna T, Anika D, Vidha S, Andrea W, Ailey B, Caitlin S, and Ian H. 
March 18, 2011 Math is Cool Fifth Grade (Des Moines, WA) There were more than 350 students from 34 schools participating in the Seattle regional Math is Cool on Friday, March 18. CONGRATULATION to the following students who participated at the Fifth Grade Math is Cool Competition: Vidha S, Alisha H, Anika D, Anna T, Rafia K, Kerilyn H, Ashley H, Rama T, Ailey B, Andrea W, Caitlin S, Ian H, and Eesha M. Rockwell's Math in Action Fifth Grade Team took home a fifth place plaque in our division. Two thumbs up to Ian H who also take home a trophy for 10th place in the Individual category. 
January 28, 2011 Fifth Grade Math Competition (Mt. Rainier Invitational at Des Moines, WA)
Congratulations to the following MIA Fifth Grade students: Andrea W, Jack T, Kerilyn H, Vidha S, Anika D, Anna T, Alisha H, Rama T, Ian H, Caitlin S, and Ailey B. Great job to Rafia K and Jenna H too who took part as alternates at the event. These students participated at the Mount Rainier Math Invitational on January 28 and got second place in the Red Division. The class will cover a range of basic math topics from basic integers operations to fractions and decimal number concepts. It will also introduce students to other math topics appeared in the past competition tests, which include algebraic reasoning and patterning, logical thinking, geometry and probabilities. This class will involve students working with their teams as they are preparing to compete at local and state competitions. Students will be exposed to multi-steps problem solving strategies. Topics discussed may be above their current grade level.

Class meets on Tuesdays afterschool from 3:00 to 4:30 PM. No class when there's no school or half day. Additional meetings may be scheduled prior competitions. Location: LIbrary. If there is a change in the location, students will be informed via email. There is a 30 minutes diagnostic test scheduled on September 17 (Friday) at 3:00-3:30PM after school.
