There will be additional practices approaching to the Math is Cool contest in Seattle.
There will be a diagnostic test at the school library (Jan. 5) for students who did not attend session 1.
Payment is due on the first day of class (Jan 12).
Fee covers all class materials, games, and a local competition fee. In addition, the class requires student to have an online subscription to www.ixl.com ($15 and it's good for the whole school year). Click on 'MIA Online' from the left menu. Don't sign up directly to IXL (you'll be charged $79).
There is no competition scheduled for session 1, except for optional Online Math League (Nov, Feb, Mar), which are open for all Rockwell students who sign up for MIA Online.
PLEASE READ BEFORE REGISTER:
This is a two-session program. The first part begins on September 22nd until December 8th (10 classes). This part will cover a range of basic math topics from basic integers operations to fractions and decimal number concepts. Students must be self-motivated and ready to learn and participate. There will be weekly assignments, and students are responsible to complete them on time. Assignment may take 20-40 minutes per week.
The second session of the class will continue on January 12 until April 27, 2010 (14 classes).Students who would like to participate in this session must either complete the Math Session 1 or perform well on a diagnostic test (January 5, 2010). The test is to measure student's number sense and basic operations skills.
In addition to strengthen basic math skills, this part of the session will introduce students to other math topics appeared in the past competition tests. It will include informal algebraic reasoning and patterning, logical thinking, and probabilities. This session will involve students working with their teams as they are preparing to compete at local competitions. Students will be exposed to multi-steps problem solving strategies. Topics discussed may be above their current grade level. There will be weekly assignments, and students are responsible to complete them on time. Assignment may take 40-60 minutes per week.
Local competition: Math is Cool (Seattle) - April 16, 2010 (3:30-8:30PM)
Online competition: OML (Nov, Feb, Mar) – three sets of tests.
MIA is an enrichment program, NOT a tutoring program.
